OSX Can't Find Samples - Spotlight, CatSearch, and EXS24

APple OSX CatSearchSince Yosemite, Apple has fundamentally changed how OSX keeps tracks of objects within the file system. This is transparent to the user, but it has proven to have more faults and less functionality than earlier OSX's.

When doing a search for samples, OSX used a File Manager API called FSCatalogSearch. This was directly based on the HFS disk format and dealt directly with disks - that was why it was so effective, accurate, and fast. However, it seems since Yosemite 10.10 OSX, this API maps to Spotlight indexes, and causes issues for us sampler folk. This ESPECIALLY affects EXS24 users, since it relies almost solely on CatSearch internally to find sample files. Click here for more info, and how Chicken Systems products can help you...

SCSI CF/SD Card Solutions - The Latest

ArtMix CF SCSI Solution pictureIn articles over the past year, we've been talking about the new SCSI CF/SD memory card solutions that are being manufactured in Australia (SCSI2SD) and Japan (ArtMix). By and large, these solutions are highly effective and most importantly are always in stock, as they are being privately manufactured.

Chicken Systems products are highly useful in managing CF/SD cards on your computer, whether Mac or Windows.

But they aren't perfect - although we are consistently in contact with the developers to make them that way. Click here for the latest info...

Akai MPC's "JJOS" and Translator

MPC JJOS DisplayTo those of you that are old enough to remember the Ensoniq Mirage, the OS was legible and hackable enough for non-company personnel to create variants of the operating system, offering new, different, and reorganized functions.

Now, with the Akai MPC - many different ones - comes "JJOS", developed by a former Akai Japan engineer. There are many different JJOS variants for different MPC's, and due to some misinformation and language barriers, we've gotten a number of inquiries if Translator and other Chicken Systems products support JJOS. Product Spotlight - methodred's MIDI/Recycle Players

methodred LogoSimple, small, and inexpensive is GOOD! This week we'd like to spotlight a pair of products from methodred™ - their REXPlayer and MIDIPlayer X. These Mac-only, small, and compact utilities - BOTH UNDER $5!!! - allow quick and easy playback of Recycle files and MIDI files on OSX Yosemite and El Capitan computers.

methodred™ is headed up by a former Roland product manager, and the apps carry with them the knowledge and sense of the market gained from that experience.methodred REXPlayer and MIDI Player X

REXPlayer ($4.99, minimum OSX 10.10) simply plays Recycle files - as a whole at any tempo or slice-by-slice - via the user drop the Recycle file onto the interface. It's fast, efficient, and quick. You see the waveform display in the dialog and you can start and stop the file at will. When you are in your DAW, it's easy to quickly audition various loops to decide on which one you want before importing, instead of cluttering up your project with loops you won't use. You can also play the slices via MIDI or via your computer keyboard! For purchase and other info, see the AppStore...

MIDIPlayer X ($1.99, minimum OSX 10.9) simply plays back MIDI files - but this is important since newer OSX's don't play these back from the Finder. Again, simply drop a MIDI file on the app and play it back, using its own built-in GM-compatible virtual synth or your choice of MIDI sound sources. Bar, Beat, and Tempo counters prominently display in the dialog. You can even Mute, Solo, and even resave the MIDI File. For purchase and other info, see the AppStore...

Again, both apps are available at the Apple AppStore. For more information, see the methodred web site.
