SCSI CF/SD Card Solutions - The Latest
March 23rd, 2016 - In articles over the past year, we've been talking about the new SCSI CF/SD memory card solutions that are being manufactured in Australia (SCSI2SD) and Japan (ArtMix). By and large, these solutions are highly effective and most importantly are always in stock, as they are being privately manufactured.
But they aren't perfect - although we are consistently in contact with the developers to make them that way.
Ensoniq Compatibility
Although we've found that both solutions work great with the EPS 16-PLUS and the ASR-10, they have two significant issues.
First, they do not hot-swap, which means that you can't take a card out and insert another and expect the EPS/ASR to recognize the new card.
Second, you currently cannot install one internally and hook it up to the floppy power - the unit will not be recognized over SCSI due to some timing problem. This can be solved two ways:
- Make a 5v 1A DC adapter that runs into a floppy power Molex jack. Then power the ArtMix on for 10-15 seconds before you power on the EPS/ASR.
- If you are skilled with electronics, insert a relay into the power chain inside the EPS/ASR so that the floppy is powered and the rest of the power goes to the EPS/ASR 15 seconds later.
Neither of these issues are deal-breakers as far as we are concerned, but you should know these issues before you invest in one.
Roland S7x Installation
First, there is no realistic way of tapping into the internal S7x SCSI port, you have to run a cable from the back DB25 jack and run a ribbon cable back into the unit. Secondly, the Roland's technically don't run without the floppy drive hooked up - but there's a workaround given to us by ArtMix - click here for the solution. Basically, you jumper two sets of pins in the floppy drive output.
ArtMix Service
ArtMix has been very quick to respond to us, but recently we've had some complaints reported to us about lack of response. We are sure that this is temporary.
