Create Virtual Drive

(For a complete explanation of what Virtual Drives are, please see the Virtual Drives section under Special Features.)

This allows you to create a new Virtual Drive, create one based on an actual physical drive or CD-ROM. Clicking on this gives you a New... option and a list of drives that are valid to create a Virtual Drive from.

New...
A dialog comes up asking you what format you want to put on Virtual Drive. Certain formats allow a couple different options. Selecting "CD-ROM" is just another way of saying "650mb"; otherwise, selecting Custom allows you to specify the format.

Physical Drive
The Format Options dialog comes up, giving you several options how large you want your Virtual Drive to be. This is helpful because the physical capacity of a hard drive or CD is NOT THE SAME as how large it is formatted for.

For example, a person who has a 2.1GB hard drive and hooks it up to an Akai S-3000 sampler and formats it only has access to the first 510mb. That's the Akai's limit. So if you could only create a Virtual Drive that was the physical size of the drive, you'd wind up with a 2.1 Virtual Drive, which is a wate of 1.5GB of space. By selecting the Formatted Size or Smallest Size option, your Virtual Drive winds up being just the right size.

Also, it is possible for the Formatted Size to be larger than the Physiacl Capacity. This may exist because the drives was formatted on something else other than the native sampler, or it's a CD that has been burned underneath the real formatted limit. When this happens, Translator™ automatically makes the drive qual to the formatted size, UNLESS Smallest Size is selected.
